Wheat Starch Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Latin American wheat starch market, when its value decreased by -7.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, wheat starch exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of wheat starch, namely Argentina, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat starch exports, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) also remains the largest wheat starch supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina totaled +2.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Argentina.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Argentina amounted to -0.1% per year.

Wheat Starch Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X tons of wheat starch were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; remaining constant against 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheat starch imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons) was the key importer of wheat starch, committing 39% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 53% share of total imports. The following importers - Guatemala (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) - each finished at a 4.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bolivia (with a CAGR of +183.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wheat starch importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Colombia ($X), Mexico ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Chile, Guatemala, Ecuador and Bolivia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Bolivia, with a CAGR of +211.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bolivia (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
