Whey Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Latin American whey market rose slightly to $X in 2022, growing by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a mild setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Whey Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, whey production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 17%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Whey Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, overseas shipments of whey were finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whey exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Argentina was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 60% of total exports. Chile (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Uruguay (16%).
Exports from Argentina decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uruguay (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uruguay and Argentina saw its share reduced by -5.2% and -7.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest whey supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina stood at -4.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+6.9% per year) and Uruguay (-3.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Whey Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of whey increased by 3.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mexico (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented the main importers of whey in 2022, accounting for near 25% and 18% of total imports, respectively. Chile (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Peru (11%), Colombia (10%) and Guatemala (6%). El Salvador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest whey importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
