Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of preservative-treated rough wood decreased by -8.5% to X cubic meters, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Chile prevails in exports structure, finishing at X cubic meters, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. Honduras (X cubic meters) took a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Costa Rica (5.7%) and Brazil (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preservative-treated rough wood exports from Chile stood at -8.0%. At the same time, Costa Rica (+14.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Costa Rica emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Honduras (-2.9%) and Brazil (-22.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile, Costa Rica and Honduras increased by +9.3, +5 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest preservative-treated rough wood supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Honduras ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 3.2% share.

In Chile, preservative-treated rough wood exports plunged by an average annual rate of -9.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Honduras (-5.7% per year) and Brazil (-23.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per cubic meter), while Costa Rica ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Preservative-Treated Rough Wood Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X cubic meters of preservative-treated rough wood were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; rising by 37% on the previous year. Overall, imports posted a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico represented the largest importer of preservative-treated rough wood in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports finishing at X cubic meters, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X cubic meters), Bahamas (X cubic meters) and Jamaica (X cubic meters), together generating a 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Haiti (X cubic meters), Belize (X cubic meters), Turks and Caicos Islands (X cubic meters), Cuba (X cubic meters) and Costa Rica (X cubic meters) - together made up 16% of total imports.

Imports into Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahamas (+26.4%), Turks and Caicos Islands (+22.7%), Belize (+10.4%), Jamaica (+7.1%), Haiti (+6.3%) and Cuba (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahamas emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2021. Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+23 p.p.), Bahamas (+12 p.p.), Turks and Caicos Islands (+2.7 p.p.), Jamaica (+2.2 p.p.) and Belize (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Peru (-40.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest preservative-treated rough wood importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Bahamas ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports.

Bahamas, with a CAGR of +27.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, falling by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Haiti ($X per cubic meter), while Belize ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Haiti (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
