The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, wood pellets exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Brazil stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Panama (-2.7%).

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of wood pellets, when their volume decreased by -9.2% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 79%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, wood pellets imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uruguay (X tons) was the key importer of wood pellets, making up 58% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Paraguay (12%) and Chile (5.5%).

Uruguay was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood pellets imports, with a CAGR of +99.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+38.2%), Chile (+24.8%) and Brazil (+20.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uruguay and Paraguay increased by +58 and +12 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood pellets in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Paraguay ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an 8.7% share.

In Uruguay, wood pellets imports expanded at an average annual rate of +74.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Paraguay (+51.0% per year) and Chile (+5.5% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, waning by -17.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
