In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 57%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
El Salvador prevails in exports structure, reaching X square meters, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. Peru (X square meters) took a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Honduras (7.4%), Brazil (6%) and the Dominican Republic (5.7%). The following exporters - Chile (X square meters) and Panama (X square meters) - each reached a 7.8% share of total exports.
El Salvador was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports, with a CAGR of +68.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Honduras (+19.4%) and Chile (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Dominican Republic (-7.6%), Brazil (-24.1%), Panama (-26.7%) and Peru (-29.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. El Salvador (+55 p.p.), Honduras (+7 p.p.), Chile (+3.5 p.p.) and the Dominican Republic (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Panama, Brazil and Peru saw its share reduced by -12.8%, -13.4% and -40.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest silk fabric supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were El Salvador ($X), Peru ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X), together accounting for 51% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, El Salvador, with a CAGR of +63.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per square meter in 2021, shrinking by -25.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per square meter), while El Salvador ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste increased by 1% to X square meters for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Colombia (X square meters) and Brazil (X square meters) represented roughly 43% of total imports in 2021. Guatemala (X square meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Nicaragua (X square meters), Chile (X square meters), the Dominican Republic (X square meters) and Peru (X square meters). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +52.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest silk fabric importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Chile, Peru, Nicaragua and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +78.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per square meter, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per square meter), while Guatemala ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
