Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, exports of man-made filament yarn in Latin America and the Caribbean declined remarkably to X tons, dropping by -17.3% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1.9%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) was the major exporter of man-made filament yarn, achieving 65% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Guatemala (6.5%) and Colombia (5.6%). Peru (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to man-made filament yarn exports from Mexico stood at -9.0%. At the same time, Brazil (+5.6%), Colombia (+2.4%) and Guatemala (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+8.6 p.p.), Guatemala (+3.9 p.p.) and Colombia (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest man-made filament yarn supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 4.4% share.

In Mexico, man-made filament yarn exports shrank by an average annual rate of -9.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+0.2% per year) and Colombia (-2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, man-made filament yarn imports in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded rapidly to X tons, surging by 9.5% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) represented the key importers of man-made filament yarn in 2021, amounting to near 26% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Argentina (X tons) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guatemala (8.7%), the Dominican Republic (6.7%) and Colombia (6%). The following importers - Chile (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Peru (X tons), Bolivia (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +19.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 66% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Colombia, Chile, Peru, El Salvador, Ecuador and Bolivia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +15.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, declining by -37.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, man-made filament yarn import price decreased by -30.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
