Durum Wheat Market Size in Latvia

The Latvian durum wheat market expanded to $X in 2022, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Lithuania (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Latvia, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Lithuania totaled +25.8%.

In value terms, Lithuania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Latvia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Lithuania stood at +30.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The average durum wheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -24.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined notably in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Lithuania.

Durum Wheat Imports

Imports into Latvia

In 2022, approx. X tons of durum wheat were imported into Latvia; declining by -27.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 468,025% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 369,378%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) constituted the largest durum wheat supplier to Latvia, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, durum wheat imports from Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Russia (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kazakhstan totaled +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+153.2% per year) and Russia (-11.8% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Latvia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kazakhstan totaled +14.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-8.2% per year) and Lithuania (+156.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average durum wheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 58%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
