Eggplant Market Size in Latvia

In 2022, the Latvian eggplant market decreased by -1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, saw notable growth. Eggplant consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, eggplant exports from Latvia skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 15% on 2021. In general, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Estonia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of eggplant exports from Latvia, with a combined 98% share of total exports. Spain lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.6%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Estonia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest markets for eggplant exported from Latvia worldwide, with a combined 99% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, which accounted for a further 0.9%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +20.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average eggplant export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, purchases abroad of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -6.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 99%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of eggplant imports to Latvia, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Germany and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +65.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest eggplant suppliers to Latvia, together accounting for 85% of total imports. Germany and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +64.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average eggplant import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 31%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
