Grape Market Size in Latvia

The Latvian grape market reduced to $X in 2022, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of grapes decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a eight-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, grape exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Estonia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of grape exports from Latvia, together comprising 99.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Estonia ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest markets for grape exported from Latvia worldwide, with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +22.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Grape Imports

Imports into Latvia

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of grapes decreased by -8.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, grape imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of grape imports to Latvia, together accounting for 56% of total imports. Moldova, Lithuania, North Macedonia and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +54.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapes to Latvia, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands amounted to +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+10.8% per year) and Italy (-5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grape import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by North Macedonia (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
