Maize oil imports into Latvia surged to X tons in 2022, growing by 35% compared with the year before. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 127%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize oil imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize oil imports to Latvia, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Slovakia and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

In 2022, the average maize oil import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+58.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
