After four years of decline, the Latvian natural quartz crystal market increased by 41% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Natural quartz crystal consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, natural quartz crystal exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 941%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X kg) was the main destination for natural quartz crystal exports from Latvia, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, natural quartz crystal exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uzbekistan (X kg), fivefold. Lithuania (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.3% share.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (0.0% per year) and Lithuania (-33.0% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for quartz crystal (natural) exports from Latvia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Lithuania, with a 3.1% share.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Turkey was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (0.0% per year) and Lithuania (-5.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average natural quartz crystal export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 2,074%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Turkey ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Estonia ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+91.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Latvia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of quartz crystal (natural) increased by 4.8% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 224% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, natural quartz crystal imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 390%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Finland (X tons) was the main natural quartz crystal supplier to Latvia, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia (X tons), with a 2.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Finland stood at +4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+26.1% per year) and Lithuania (-42.8% per year).

In value terms, Finland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of quartz crystal (natural) to Latvia, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Finland stood at +22.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+39.0% per year) and Lithuania (-31.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average natural quartz crystal import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
