Telephone Market Size in Latvia
In 2022, the Latvian telephone market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telephone production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. Telephone production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Latvia
In 2022, shipments abroad of telephones and videophones was finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 99%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, telephone exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Lithuania (X units) was the main destination for telephone exports from Latvia, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, telephone exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X units), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania totaled -13.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+2.3% per year) and Russia (+12.7% per year).
In value terms, Lithuania ($X) remains the key foreign market for telephones and videophones exports from Latvia, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Lithuania totaled -13.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+11.5% per year) and Germany (-16.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average telephone export price amounted to $X per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Telephone Imports
Imports into Latvia
After three years of decline, overseas purchases of telephones and videophones increased by 341% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible descent. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, telephone imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Estonia (X units), Germany (X units) and Slovakia (X units) were the main suppliers of telephone imports to Latvia, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +30.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest telephone suppliers to Latvia were Estonia ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports. Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +30.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average telephone import price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -46.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Hungary ($X per unit) and Austria ($X per unit), while the price for Germany ($X per unit) and Lithuania ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
