Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, virgin olive oil exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 245%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Tunisia (X tons) was the main destination for virgin olive oil exports from Libya, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of virgin olive oil decreased by -22.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 947%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, virgin olive oil imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 868%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Tunisia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of virgin olive oil to Libya, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, virgin olive oil imports from Tunisia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Tunisia amounted to -2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+39.5% per year) and Spain (+1.9% per year).
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of virgin olive oil to Libya, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Tunisia amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+37.0% per year) and Spain (+0.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average virgin olive oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 23%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Spain ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
