Activated Carbon Market Size in Lithuania

In 2022, the Lithuanian activated carbon market increased by 74% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a significant expansion. Activated carbon consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, overseas shipments of activated carbon decreased by -45.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated carbon exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) were the main destinations of activated carbon exports from Lithuania, together comprising 69% of total exports. Belarus, Ukraine, Chile, Moldova, Serbia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +111.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) were the largest markets for activated carbon exported from Lithuania worldwide, together accounting for 77% of total exports. Chile, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Among the main countries of destination, Moldova, with a CAGR of +125.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average activated carbon export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, overseas purchases of activated carbon increased by 35% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated carbon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of activated carbon imports to Lithuania, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Vietnam, Belgium, Belarus, the Netherlands, China and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +110.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest activated carbon suppliers to Lithuania were India ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports. Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Poland and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +105.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average activated carbon import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, activated carbon import price increased by +59.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
