The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 334% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, buckwheat exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 258%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of buckwheat exports from Lithuania, together accounting for 93% of total exports. Germany and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.6%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +118.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for buckwheat exported from Lithuania were Poland ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 90% of total exports. Latvia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.9%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of +101.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average buckwheat export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 75%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Imports
Imports into Lithuania
In 2022, overseas purchases of buckwheat increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 626% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, buckwheat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 508%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest buckwheat supplier to Lithuania, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, buckwheat imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Latvia (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Estonia (X tons), with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia totaled +12.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+6.1% per year) and Estonia (+0.6% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of buckwheat to Lithuania, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Latvia ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at +22.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+14.9% per year) and Estonia (+7.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average buckwheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Latvia ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) and Estonia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
