Corrugated Paper Box Market Size in Lithuania

For the third year in a row, the Lithuanian corrugated paper box market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.5% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. Corrugated paper box consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, corrugated paper box production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 25%. Corrugated paper box production peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports from Lithuania

In 2022, overseas shipments of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard decreased by -14.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, corrugated paper box exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Latvia (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the main destinations of corrugated paper box exports from Lithuania, together comprising 68% of total exports. Poland, Germany, Sweden, Iceland, Russia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iceland (with a CAGR of +67.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for corrugated paper box exported from Lithuania were Latvia ($X), Estonia ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 63% share of total exports. Poland, Germany, Sweden, Iceland, Russia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Iceland, with a CAGR of +86.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average corrugated paper box export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Sweden ($X per ton) and Iceland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iceland (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, purchases abroad of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard decreased by -7.8% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, corrugated paper box imports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest corrugated paper box supplier to Lithuania, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, corrugated paper box imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Latvia (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland stood at +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+0.6% per year) and Germany (+1.7% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard to Lithuania, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Latvia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland stood at +14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+3.5% per year) and Germany (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average corrugated paper box import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
