The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -28.9% against 2020 indices. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Estonia (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of herring, salted or in brine exports from Lithuania, with a combined 61% share of total exports. Poland, the UK, Slovakia, Germany, South Korea, Israel, Ireland, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +56.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Estonia ($X), the United States ($X) and Latvia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for herring, salted or in brine exported from Lithuania worldwide, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Poland, the UK, Slovakia, Germany, Ireland, Israel, South Korea, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

In 2022, the average export price for herring, salted or in brine amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of herring, salted or in brine were imported into Lithuania; falling by -15.5% on 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, herring, salted or in brine imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest herring, salted or in brine supplier to Lithuania, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, herring, salted or in brine imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (-1.4% per year) and Latvia (+2.8% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of herring, salted or in brine to Lithuania, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled -2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (-2.3% per year) and Latvia (-1.3% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
