Honey Market Size in Lithuania
For the third year in a row, the Lithuanian honey market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a remarkable increase. Honey consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Honey Production in Lithuania
In value terms, honey production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Honey production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Honey Exports
Exports from Lithuania
After four years of growth, overseas shipments of honey decreased by -31.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, honey exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) was the main destination for honey exports from Lithuania, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, honey exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. Latvia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland totaled +116.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+17.2% per year) and Latvia (+17.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for honey exported from Lithuania were Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Latvia ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports. Spain, France, Japan, the UK, Austria, Belgium, Estonia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Japan, with a CAGR of +172.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average honey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Honey Imports
Imports into Lithuania
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of honey, when their volume decreased by -26.8% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 98%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, honey imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of honey to Lithuania, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, honey imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine stood at +26.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+30.6% per year) and China (+19.2% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of honey to Lithuania, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine amounted to +27.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+27.7% per year) and China (+17.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average honey import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
