For the fifth year in a row, the Lithuanian metal wool market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -66.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a precipitous curtailment. Denmark (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) were the main destinations of metal wool exports from Lithuania, with a combined 81% share of total exports. Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In value terms, the largest markets for metal wool exported from Lithuania were Latvia ($X), Denmark ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +22.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average metal wool export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -25% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 27%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of iron or steel wool decreased by -42.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 26%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal wool imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of metal wool imports to Lithuania, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Estonia, China, Latvia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +64.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
