Maize Market Size in Lithuania

The Lithuanian maize market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption recorded a significant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Lithuania

For the fourth consecutive year, Lithuania recorded decline in shipments abroad of maize (green), which decreased by -71.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 201% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 179%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Lithuania, together comprising 95% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, which accounted for a further 3.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +91.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for maize (green) exports from Lithuania, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Latvia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+17.8% per year) and Estonia (+2.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 114%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Lithuania

For the fifth year in a row, Lithuania recorded decline in supplies from abroad of maize (green), which decreased by -25.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Lithuania, with a combined 70% share of total imports. Latvia, Germany, Spain and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +32.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Latvia ($X) were the largest maize suppliers to Lithuania, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Poland, Germany, Spain and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +42.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
