Mustard Seed Market Size in Lithuania

In 2022, the Lithuanian mustard seed market decreased by -21.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 88%. Over the period under review, the average mustard seed yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of mustard seed exports from Lithuania, with a combined 72% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Estonia (with a CAGR of +41.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest markets for mustard seed exported from Lithuania worldwide, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +45.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mustard seed export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+14.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mustard Seed Imports

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, the amount of mustard seed imported into Lithuania contracted significantly to X tons, reducing by -34.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 141%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mustard seed imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 222% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Denmark (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mustard seed to Lithuania, with a 28% share of total imports. Moreover, mustard seed imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Estonia (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Denmark amounted to +63.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+7.1% per year) and Estonia (+95.5% per year).

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Estonia ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest mustard seed suppliers to Lithuania, together accounting for 51% of total imports.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +79.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mustard seed import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 47% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mustard seed import price increased by +68.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
