Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +104.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 39%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Lithuania

In 2022, the amount of orthopaedic appliances and splints exported from Lithuania shrank to X tons, dropping by -3.2% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 73%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orthopaedic appliances exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) were the main destinations of orthopaedic appliances exports from Lithuania, with a combined 71% share of total exports. Belgium, Norway, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belarus and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +147.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Russia ($X) and Norway ($X) were the largest markets for orthopaedic appliances exported from Lithuania worldwide, with a combined 67% share of total exports. Germany, Belarus, Switzerland, Belgium, Latvia and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +87.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average orthopaedic appliances export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Orthopaedic Appliances Imports

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, the amount of orthopaedic appliances and splints imported into Lithuania skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 43% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orthopaedic appliances imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest orthopaedic appliances supplier to Lithuania, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, orthopaedic appliances imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+42.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest orthopaedic appliances suppliers to Lithuania, with a combined 56% share of total imports. China, Poland, Spain, Italy, Ireland and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +119.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average orthopaedic appliances import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
