Russia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Norway (X tons) were the main destinations of paper and paperboard exports from Lithuania, together comprising 81% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +179.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Lithuania, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Norway, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia stood at +13.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+66.0% per year) and Norway (+118.7% per year).

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard export price decreased by -2.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), when their volume increased by 0.1% to X tons. In general, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard to Lithuania, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sweden (X tons), with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland stood at +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+34.0% per year) and Sweden (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to Lithuania, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Finland, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland amounted to +10.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+7.3% per year) and Finland (+38.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 87%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
