In 2022, overseas shipments of residues of starch manufacture increased by 60% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 356%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, starch manufacture residues exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 248%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Latvia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of starch manufacture residues exports from Lithuania, with a combined 89% share of total exports. Norway and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +69.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Germany ($X) and Latvia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for starch manufacture residues exported from Lithuania worldwide, together comprising 81% of total exports. Russia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, starch manufacture residues imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 113%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of starch manufacture residues imports to Lithuania, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Latvia, Denmark and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.8%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest starch manufacture residues suppliers to Lithuania were Ukraine ($X), Hungary ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Hungary, with a CAGR of +25.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average starch manufacture residues import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, starch manufacture residues import price increased by +18.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
