Salt Market Size in Lithuania

The Lithuanian salt market declined remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -39% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, salt exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Latvia (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from Lithuania, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, salt exports to Latvia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Estonia (X tons), with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Latvia amounted to +37.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+60.9% per year) and Estonia (+10.0% per year).

In value terms, Latvia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for salt and pure sodium chloride exports from Lithuania, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Latvia totaled +22.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+49.7% per year) and Estonia (+4.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average salt export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Lithuania

In 2022, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride imported into Lithuania reduced sharply to X tons, falling by -50.6% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 198% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, salt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main suppliers of salt imports to Lithuania, with a combined 56% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +1,500.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salt and pure sodium chloride to Lithuania, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Morocco amounted to +1,408.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+7.7% per year) and Poland (+8.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average salt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 151% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed prominent growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
