Imports into Lithuania
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of snails (except sea snails) decreased by -58.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, snail imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of snail to Lithuania, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, snail imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine amounted to +17.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+14.5% per year) and Turkey (+3.7% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of snails (except sea snails) to Lithuania, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ukraine totaled +55.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+2.6% per year) and Romania (+14.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average snail import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 84% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 144%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+32.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
