Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from Luxembourg, with a combined 98% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +1.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for rice exported from Luxembourg worldwide, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+54.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of rice increased by 2.1% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 17%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, rice imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Luxembourg, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, rice imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium totaled +8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+3.0% per year) and France (+10.0% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Luxembourg, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium totaled +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+16.9% per year) and France (+9.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
