Abrasives Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian abrasives market expanded to $X in 2021, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. In 2021, overseas shipments of abrasives (natural) increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 150% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 156% against the previous year. Exports by Country

Japan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of abrasives exports from Malaysia, with a combined 41% share of total exports. Vietnam, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Australia, Bangladesh, Turkey and New Zealand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 50%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by New Zealand (with a CAGR of +119.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the largest markets for abrasives exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Qatar, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Turkey and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 49%.

New Zealand, with a CAGR of +196.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average abrasives export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of abrasives (natural) imported into Malaysia rose sharply to X tons, with an increase of 9.4% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, abrasives imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sierra Leone (X tons), India (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of abrasives imports to Malaysia, with a combined 78% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +47.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest abrasives suppliers to Malaysia were India ($X), China ($X) and Sierra Leone ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 26%.
