Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 23%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia
In 2022, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were exported from Malaysia; waning by -1.9% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium foil exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +68.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 34%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
India (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of aluminium foil exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 38% of total exports. The United States, Singapore, Australia, Belgium, Indonesia, the Philippines, Germany, Turkey, Taiwan (Chinese) and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +50.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), India ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for aluminium foil exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 48% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +61.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average aluminium foil export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, aluminium foil export price increased by +68.5% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of aluminium foil increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, aluminium foil imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest aluminium foil supplier to Malaysia, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium foil imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-7.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium foil to Malaysia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+7.9% per year) and South Korea (+1.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average aluminium foil import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 10%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
