In 2021, overseas purchases of apples increased by less than 0.1% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) were the main suppliers of apple imports to Malaysia, with a combined 85% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, the United States and France, which together accounted for a further 8.9%.
