Cadmium Market Size in Malaysia

In 2022, the Malaysian cadmium market decreased by -8.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Cadmium consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Cadmium Production in Malaysia

In value terms, cadmium production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Cadmium production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia

In 2022, approx. X tons of cadmium were exported from Malaysia; shrinking by -5.9% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cadmium exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of cadmium exports from Malaysia, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +35.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the United States ($X) and India ($X) were the largest markets for cadmium exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

India, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cadmium export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of cadmium, when their volume decreased by -11.2% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, cadmium imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cadmium to Malaysia, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, cadmium imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +16.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+33.9% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+27.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Canada ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the largest cadmium suppliers to Malaysia, together comprising 85% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +15.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average cadmium import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a precipitous descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
