Cheese Market Size in Malaysia

For the third year in a row, the Malaysian cheese market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +27.0% against 2017 indices. Cheese consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, cheese production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of cheese increased by 3.7% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of cheese exports from Malaysia, with a combined 72% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +48.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Singapore ($X) and Brunei Darussalam ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for cheese exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Cambodia and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Among the main countries of destination, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +63.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cheese export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Malaysia

For the third year in a row, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas purchases of cheese, which increased by 2.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.5% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. New Zealand (X tons), Australia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to Malaysia, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Singapore, Denmark, Ireland, Germany, the UK and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +159.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X), New Zealand ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest cheese suppliers to Malaysia, together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the UK and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Among the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +172.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cheese import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
