For the fifth year in a row, the Malaysian chestnut market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a deep downturn. Chestnut consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia
Chestnut exports from Malaysia fell markedly to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -23.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 579% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, chestnut exports plummeted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons) was the main destination for chestnut exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, chestnut exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Indonesia (X tons), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Thailand totaled +41.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+33.9% per year) and Singapore (-12.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for chestnut exported from Malaysia were Thailand ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Thailand, with a CAGR of +29.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average chestnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

For the seventh year in a row, Malaysia recorded decline in overseas purchases of chestnuts, which decreased by -14.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 2% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chestnut imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the main chestnut supplier to Malaysia, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, chestnut imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+13.4% per year) and Singapore (-25.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Malaysia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to -15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+20.0% per year) and Singapore (-26.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chestnut import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
