Chlorides Market Size in Malaysia

In 2021, the Malaysian chlorides market decreased by -11% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports from Malaysia

In 2021, shipments abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) increased by 3% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for chlorides exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, chlorides exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Azerbaijan (X tons), twofold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore stood at +9.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (0.0% per year) and Thailand (-1.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for chlorides exported from Malaysia were Singapore ($X), Japan ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 53% of total exports. The Philippines, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Tanzania and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Among the main countries of destination, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +21.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average chlorides export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -15.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

After five years of growth, purchases abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -19.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 96%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, chlorides imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, chlorides imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+9.7% per year) and Vietnam (+13.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), the UK ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest chlorides suppliers to Malaysia, together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Indonesia and Canada, which together accounted for a further 8.3%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chlorides import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+40.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
