Common Clay Market Size in Malaysia
After three years of decline, the Malaysian common clay market increased by 55% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a abrupt contraction. Common clay consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Common Clay Production in Malaysia
In value terms, common clay production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Common clay production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of common clay, when their volume decreased by -57% to X tons. In general, exports saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 271% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, common clay exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 213%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for common clay exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, common clay exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea amounted to +319.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+99.7% per year) and Myanmar (+49.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for common clay exported from Malaysia were South Korea ($X), Singapore ($X) and Myanmar ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports.
South Korea, with a CAGR of +290.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average common clay export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 53% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2022, the amount of common clay imported into Malaysia reduced to X tons, waning by -5.4% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 190%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, common clay imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of common clay to Malaysia, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, common clay imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-30.0% per year) and the United States (-4.5% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common clay to Malaysia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India totaled +17.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-2.0% per year) and China (-17.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average common clay import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common clay import price decreased by -10.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 51% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
