Coconut Market Size in Malaysia

In 2022, the Malaysian coconut market decreased by -4.7% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. Coconut consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Coconut Production in Malaysia

In value terms, coconut production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 97%. Coconut production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of coconuts in Malaysia fell to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -1.9% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In value terms, coconut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for coconut exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, coconut exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore stood at +23.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+59.0% per year) and China (+26.1% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Pakistan ($X) and China ($X) were the largest markets for coconut exported from Malaysia worldwide, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +88.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average coconut export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 106%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2022, the amount of coconuts imported into Malaysia was estimated at X tons, approximately mirroring the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 465% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 511% against the previous year.
