Green Coffee Market Size in Malaysia

In 2022, the Malaysian green coffee market increased by 1.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of coffee (green) in Malaysia reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the year before. Exports from Malaysia

In 2022, the amount of coffee (green) exported from Malaysia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 26% on 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 115%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Oman (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 64% of total exports. South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, Sri Lanka, China and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +104.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Oman ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest markets for green coffee exported from Malaysia worldwide, together accounting for 65% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, China, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +61.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average green coffee export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coffee (green) increased by 4.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, green coffee imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of green coffee imports to Malaysia, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Colombia and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +50.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee suppliers to Malaysia were Vietnam ($X), Brazil ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports. Colombia and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +45.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
