The Malaysian copper tube and pipe market declined markedly to $X in 2021, dropping by -33% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a drastic downturn. Copper tube and pipe consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Thailand, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Egypt, Kuwait, Russia and Italy, which together accounted for a further 39%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Russia, with a CAGR of +328.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average copper tube and pipe export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Poland ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2021, purchases abroad of copper tubes and pipes decreased by -17.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper tube and pipe imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest copper tube and pipe supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, copper tube and pipe imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), fourfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
