After two years of decline, the Malaysian market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 20% to $X in 2021. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -16.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -21.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 135%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 87%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons) was the main destination for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports to Indonesia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Brunei Darussalam (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Indonesia amounted to -9.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (+66.9% per year) and Singapore (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Brunei Darussalam ($X) were the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

Brunei Darussalam, with a CAGR of +49.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 83%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+102.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, when their volume decreased by -6.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine to Malaysia, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Thailand totaled +32.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+105.2% per year) and Japan (+45.1% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines to Malaysia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Singapore amounted to +84.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+36.6% per year) and Thailand (+18.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average import price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
