In 2021, the Malaysian fluoropolymers market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -15.1% against 2018 indices. Exports from Malaysia
In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of fluoropolymers, when their volume decreased by -38.2% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 504%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, fluoropolymers exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 201%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for fluoropolymers exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, fluoropolymers exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), more than tenfold. Algeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +84.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+18.7% per year) and Algeria (-6.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for fluoropolymers exports from Malaysia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China amounted to +53.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+9.2% per year) and Algeria (-17.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average fluoropolymers export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (-8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Fluoropolymers Imports
Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, the amount of fluoropolymers imported into Malaysia surged to X tons, rising by 17% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fluoropolymers imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 84%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of fluoropolymers imports to Malaysia, together accounting for 55% of total imports. The United States, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Singapore, Italy, India, Mexico, Germany and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +2,291.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fluoropolymers suppliers to Malaysia were China ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Singapore, Mexico, India, Italy, Germany and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 27%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +1,493.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fluoropolymers import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 42%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+19.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
