Baby Food Market Size in Malaysia
The Malaysian baby food market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -8.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +69.4% against 2014 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of food preparations for infants decreased by -0.7% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 30%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, baby food exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of baby food exports from Malaysia, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +125.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brunei Darussalam ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest markets for baby food exported from Malaysia worldwide, together comprising 59% of total exports. Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +107.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average baby food export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brunei Darussalam (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of food preparations for infants were imported into Malaysia; reducing by -5% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, baby food imports reduced to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) constituted the largest baby food supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, baby food imports from Singapore exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Philippines (X tons), with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Singapore amounted to +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+29.9% per year) and the Philippines (-5.4% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest baby food suppliers to Malaysia, together accounting for 70% of total imports. The Philippines, New Zealand, Indonesia, Australia and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
China, with a CAGR of +62.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average baby food import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 9.9%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
