For the sixth year in a row, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas shipments of prepared dishes and meals, which increased by 6.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +53.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, prepared dish and meal exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main destinations of prepared dish and meal exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 29% of total exports. The Philippines, China, Australia, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Thailand, Russia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for prepared dish and meal exported from Malaysia were Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together accounting for 30% of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 42%.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +34.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average prepared dish and meal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Malaysia
Prepared dish and meal imports into Malaysia surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.9% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, prepared dish and meal imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), the United States (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of prepared dish and meal imports to Malaysia, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Singapore, New Zealand, Denmark, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +36.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), the United States ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the largest prepared dish and meal suppliers to Malaysia, with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Vietnam and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 27%.
In terms of the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +35.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average prepared dish and meal import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
