Graphite Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian graphite market shrank markedly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -27.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption recorded a abrupt descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Malaysia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) decreased by -42.8% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 3,976%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. Thailand (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Malaysia, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X tons), with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Thailand amounted to +128.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+22.9% per year) and Vietnam (+32.6% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the key foreign market for graphite exports from Malaysia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Thailand totaled +127.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+9.7% per year) and Vietnam (+36.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Malaysia

Graphite imports into Malaysia contracted rapidly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -28% on 2020. In general, imports faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 766%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 607%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Malaysia, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with an 8.1% share.
