In value terms, gravel and crushed stone exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for gravel and crushed stone exports from Malaysia, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, gravel and crushed stone exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore totaled -6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+44.1% per year) and Bangladesh (+90.2% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for gravel and crushed stone exports from Malaysia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore amounted to -6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (-0.5% per year) and Bangladesh (+48.1% per year).

In 2021, the average gravel and crushed stone export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, approx. X tons of gravel and crushed stone were imported into Malaysia; with a decrease of -6% on 2020. Over the period under review, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons), China (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the main suppliers of gravel and crushed stone imports to Malaysia, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, India, Hong Kong SAR, Canada, Indonesia and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest gravel and crushed stone suppliers to Malaysia, together comprising 66% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Turkey, Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand, Indonesia and Canada, which together accounted for a further 17%.
Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +36.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average gravel and crushed stone import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
