In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 499% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 555% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Brunei Darussalam (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 61% of total exports. These countries were followed by India, South Korea, Qatar, Japan and China, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +3,037.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exported from Malaysia were Qatar ($X), South Korea ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Japan, Brunei Darussalam, China and India, which together accounted for a further 35%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +613.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+29.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, approx. X tons of halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons were imported into Malaysia; waning by -3.9% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 81%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +5.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), India (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports to Malaysia, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +69.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons to Malaysia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK amounted to +38.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-7.7% per year) and China (-3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -17.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 38%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
