In 2018, approx. X tons of husked (brown) rice were exported from Malaysia; rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, brown rice exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, brown rice exports reached their peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brown rice exports amounted to $X in 2018. In general, brown rice exports continue to indicate a skyrocketing increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, brown rice exports reached their peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, exports failed to regain their momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Suriname (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) were the main destinations of brown rice exports from Malaysia, together comprising X% of total exports. Seychelles, New Zealand, Togo and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Seychelles (+X% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Suriname ($X) and Brunei Darussalam ($X) were the largest markets for brown rice exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The average brown rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2018, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price indicated resilient growth from 2007 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, brown rice export price decreased by -X% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, export prices failed to regain their momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Togo, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2018, the imports of husked (brown) rice into Malaysia amounted to X tons, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, brown rice imports, however, continue to indicate an abrupt drop. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, brown rice imports reached their peak of X tons. From 2011 to 2018, the growth of brown rice imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brown rice imports amounted to $X in 2018. Over the period under review, brown rice imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, brown rice imports reached their peak of $X. From 2011 to 2018, the growth of brown rice imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Pakistan (X tons) constituted the largest brown rice supplier to Malaysia, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, brown rice imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Vietnam (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume from Pakistan stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+X% per year) and Vietnam (-X% per year).

In value terms, Pakistan ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the largest brown rice suppliers to Malaysia, with a combined X% share of total imports.

The average brown rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2018, going up by X% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, brown rice import price increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 an increase of X% y-o-y. In that year, the average import prices for husked (brown) rice reached their peak level of $X per ton. From 2011 to 2018, the growth in terms of the average import prices for husked (brown) rice remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
