In 2021, overseas shipments of iron or steel skid chain decreased by -56.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 1,338%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metal skid chain exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 843%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Australia (X tons), France (X tons) and Solomon Islands (X tons) were the main destinations of metal skid chain exports from Malaysia, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +89.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for iron or steel skid chain exports from Malaysia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Solomon Islands, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +32.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+49.9% per year) and Solomon Islands (+50.1% per year).

In 2021, the average metal skid chain export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -41.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 55%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, overseas purchases of iron or steel skid chain decreased by -41% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 152% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, metal skid chain imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of metal skid chain to Malaysia, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, metal skid chain imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+54.1% per year) and Germany (+9.2% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest metal skid chain suppliers to Malaysia, together accounting for 66% of total imports. Thailand, China and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Among the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +39.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average metal skid chain import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
