Paper Label Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian paper label market shrank to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +7.0% against 2019 indices. Exports from Malaysia

In 2021, paper label exports from Malaysia dropped modestly to X tons, approximately mirroring 2020. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper label exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) were the main destinations of paper label exports from Malaysia, with a combined 63% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +26.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for labels of paper or paperboard exports from Malaysia, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore stood at -7.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+0.8% per year) and the Philippines (-0.6% per year).

In 2021, the average paper label export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, paper label export price increased by +78.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports into Malaysia

For the third year in a row, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas purchases of labels of paper or paperboard, which increased by 49% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper label imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest paper label supplier to Malaysia, with a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, paper label imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-11.9% per year) and Thailand (+5.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of labels of paper or paperboard to Malaysia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-8.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-5.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average paper label import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, paper label import price decreased by -28.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
