From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for lemon and lime exports from Malaysia, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, lemon and lime exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brunei Darussalam (X tons), with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-6.7% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+60.2% per year).
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the key foreign market for lemons and limes exports from Malaysia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (+62.7% per year) and Thailand (+0.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lemon and lime export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
After four years of growth, overseas purchases of lemons and limes decreased by -9.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, lemon and lime imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest lemon and lime supplier to Malaysia, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, lemon and lime imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+17.7% per year) and Vietnam (+44.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest lemon and lime suppliers to Malaysia were South Africa ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +45.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average lemon and lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lemon and lime import price decreased by -21.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 49%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
