In 2021, the Malaysian lithium-ion accumulator market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, shipments abroad of lithium-ion accumulators increased by 3.9% to X units, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 623%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 613%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X units) was the main destination for lithium-ion accumulator exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, lithium-ion accumulator exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), twofold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +57.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+45.4% per year) and China (+40.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for lithium-ion accumulator exported from Malaysia were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and the United States ($X), together accounting for 62% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +68.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average lithium-ion accumulator export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -19.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+34.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, approx. X units of lithium-ion accumulators were imported into Malaysia; rising by 93% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 232% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 273% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of lithium-ion accumulator to Malaysia, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium-ion accumulator imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X units), fourfold. Singapore (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-2.1% per year) and Singapore (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium-ion accumulators to Malaysia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +10.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-3.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-8.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average lithium-ion accumulator import price amounted to $X per unit, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the price for Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
